Madurai arch collapse: JCB driver killed, contractor injured during demolition – Tamil Nadu News

During the demolition of Madurai’s iconic arch at Mattuthavani Bus Stand in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday night, an earthmover operator was killed and left the contractor severely injured.

The arch, built in 1981 during MG Ramachandran’s (MGR) rule to commemorate the 5th World Tamil Conference, had become an obstruction due to road expansion over the years. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench, which directed its demolition if no alternative solution was feasible.

As demolition began using an earthmover, a pillar of the arch collapsed, crushing the driver to death and leaving the contractor seriously injured.

Fire and rescue department officials rushed to the spot and recovered the operator’s body, while the contractor was shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment.

The shocking incident was caught on camera and has since gone viral.

Another incident from Tamil Nadu shows an Indian Gaur colliding with a two-wheeler while it was crossing the road in Tamil Nadu’s Guddalore. The impact threw both the rider and the passenger into the air. Both escaped unhurt in the accident. The incident was caught on camera and has been going viral.
